The major difference between a dropshipping business and standard retail business is that the seller or store owner doesn’t stock or own inventory. Instead, the seller purchases inventory as needed from a third party like a wholesaler or manufacturer to fulfill orders of the customers.

In simple words, dropshipping works like this: You open up an online store and add the products you want to sell from suppliers who want you to sell their products, while they fulfill the orders on your behalf. They store all inventory, then package, ship, and send you the tracking information when you place your order with them. Apart from this, you will also need to help potential customers in finding, evaluating, and buying the right product plus provide good customer support whenever there is an issue. Finally, you also have to keep regular checks on the original price that your supplier sells the product for.


With all the cost and effort mentioned above, dropshipping marks up individual products in exchange for distribution which is why suppliers are happy with dropshippers marketing their products for them. The dropshipping business adds additional sales that the supplier might have missed. Hence in order to make a decent profit out of your dropshipping business, you need to have a good understanding of your customer acquisition cost, what kind of competition is there in the market for the products you are selling, and price your products according to that.
